한국인 of the Day: Lee Jin Won

Stunning Asian female bodybuilder Lee Jin Won would not look out of place in one of those magazine lists of ‘the 10 most beautiful women in the world’, said Real Female Bodybuilding in October 2013. The 35-year-old 5’4″ [1.63m] fitness athlete with a string of titles to her name presents an incredible blend of old-fashioned ‘Ms World’ type feminine beauty and a rather more modern rock hard physique.

And ripped, very ripped for a fitness/bodyfitness competitor. And those ABS! Perhaps not quite as wonderful at first glance as those of her compatriot Park Soo Hee, but what it’s what Lee Jin Won does with them (especially when she’s on stage), that makes her infinitely more exciting. She KNOWS they are incredible, and OMG does she let you know that she knows. Witness, for example, this abstastic 7½-minute compilation (from the marvellously named Hardslammer’s You Tube channel).

I bet some of you won’t make it past what happens in the first few seconds, but if you do, you will be rewarded with highlights that include backstage abs rolling from the 15-second mark, looped AND slowed down for your viewing pleasure – nice work Mr Editor – and on stage abs rolling from about 1.15. And there is still another 5+ minutes to enjoy after that, so you really need to pace yourselves on this one!

Ain’t she just a HEARTBREAKER? Very hard to believe this woman was around 35 when the majority of these pics and video were taken, as some sources report. Easier to believe she was born in 1987, as other sources claim, putting her in her 20s.

See, what I’m HOPING is that the reason why we haven’t heard much about her this year is that she’s on a mission for muscle. That the fact she so obviously enjoys showing it off means she’s made the decision that she needs to get bigger before moving up to physique. Imagine! That ‘Ms World’ (Korean style) beauty with bigger and bolder muscles, rolling those abs all over the stage as the crowd goes WILD…

Inspired by… Aiden

It’s always nice to know that someone is reading my musings, and even nicer when they actually bother to share their thoughts and/or reach out a mutually female muscle appreciating hand. So, this week on FMS, for some of the lovely readers who have been in touch (whether by email or the comment box), a whole post inspired by them as a way of saying thank you for supporting the blog.

I hope they, and you, will enjoy them.

Back in June, Aiden became FMS‘ first (and so far only) Guest Editor and introduced us to his favourite Crossfit women. His love of muscular women started first emerged when ‘finding female athletes beguiling when I was about 10 years old,’ he told us, so we’ll kick off today with a few ‘athletes’…

(Female) Muscle Beach of the Day

That gorgeous Tanya Hyde has a remarkable muscular physique to go with her looks should be obvious to anyone. But did you know that Tanya has recently become the first female bodybuilder to hire herself out to her local council as a tourist attraction?

Tanya was signed up to ‘appear’ on the boardwalk on the second and fourth Sundays of the month as part of the municipality’s bid to reinvigorate the area. Tanya just has to turn up in a bikini and ‘preen and pose’, according to her job description. And it’s no surprise that visitor numbers on these ‘Tanya Days’ are on the up. Consequently, local politicians are currently sounding out other female muscle babes with a view to populating the seafront with a bevvy of muscular beauties every Saturday and Sunday.

FMS will be keeping a close eye on how the scheme develops.

Backstage of the Day

Earlier in the week, we heard about all the things a woman needs with her backstage, courtesy of Rebecca Slatt on Bodybuilding.com. Well, Rebecca also has a list of things not to bring, and, alas, one of those is us, ‘Men’.

I know it is nice and comforting to have your boyfriend, husband, or trainer backstage; however, most women do not want to be changing suits and gluing them on in front of male strangers! Have some respect for your fellow competitors!

And there we were thinking it didn’t get any better than boyfriend/husband/trainer of a competitive bodybuilder. How wrong we were. Damn!

So I guess if you are not the boyfriend, husband or trainer of a competitor, but you are a photographer, a ‘helper’ or an official, you get to see all the action…

You might get to take her home after the show, but you’ll have to kiss her goodbye before all the action starts. So, who’s this foxy fitness babe blowing little kiss for?

Oiling and adjusting. Can you believe some people actually volunteer for this?

Eva Lagerhorn Blom seems to be really really enjoying the pump, while Yaxeni‘s mind seems to be elsewhere. She seems preoccupied. Maybe she’s watching Iris. Maybe she’s thinking ‘Damn you, Iris Kyle’…

Cheer up Yaxeni. You looked great at the Miss International this year. You looked great on stage and you looked great in the pump room. As did Debi, Angela, Olga, Jeannie, Kim, Brigita, Cathy, Elena and Tazzie. And, yes, so did Iris.

Hot and Hard: Danielle Reardon

The ‘High School Bodybuilder’ at Wesley Chapel High School in Florida

A few years ago, a homemade video appeared on the forums of a ‘High School Bodybuilder’ called Danielle Reardon. The clip (which as far as I can see is no longer available to watch) consisted solely of Danielle talking to camera. She talked, as far as I remember, about her future goals in the sport, her love of the lifestyle and the thrill she got from competing. I remember thinking that she was rather eloquent and came across as being very sure of herself and what she wanted. And I also remember thinking, Hang on! She’s talking about having competed. How can a teenage girl possibly have competed already?

Well, that’s first place, thinks the girl in the glasses. Maybe I can get second.

To Brits like me, the idea that a high school (or secondary school as we say over here) would have a bodybuilding contest is, well, a little far-fetched. As a teenager I might have dreamed that some of the girls from the hockey team, the ones who frequented the weights room anyway, would do a bit of flexing for me, but it never once occurred to my overactive imagination that they would stand on the stage at the school in bikinis as competitors in our school’s bodybuilding show.

It seems high school bodybuilding not only exists, but is well-established in some schools, at least in some parts of the US. The shows are essentially fundraisers for some sporting activity or another at the school, and involve boys and girls. Not surprisingly, perhaps, these shows have attracted rather a large amount of criticism. One member of the American Council on Exercise has said that teenagers experimenting with nutritional supplements, crash dieting or pre-contest dehydration is ‘a recipe for disaster. Emotionally, psychologically, physiologically, their bodies are not ready for it.’

But Danielle didn’t appear to have any of these issues. She seemed well-aware of what she was committing herself to, and did so simply because she had decided that the lifestyle bodybuilding entails was the life that she wanted to lead. And that is exactly what she has done.

Born in 1990 (!), Danielle hails from Florida. She attended Wesley Chapel High School, and competed in their annual bodybuilding show every year she was there, winning it in both her junior and senior years. It was totally energizing, she says, I loved the spotlight.

In 2010, she competed as a Figure competitor at NPC shows, and continued to do so in 2011, winning the short class at the Sunshine Classic and finishing 14th at the Nationals that year. But, now 21, it was becoming apparent that all those years of bodybuilding as a teenager meant that Danielle was simply too muscular to succeed in Figure at the highest level, and right from the get-go she had made it her ambition to be at that level, so she decided to move up to Physique.

The improvement in her results were immediate. She won her class (short) at the Mid-Florida Classic, finished 2nd at the NPC Southern States, and consequently qualified for the Nationals. There, she won her class. At the age of 22, she had her pro card.

It doesn’t take a crystal ball to see that this young woman is on the verge of becoming a phenomenon. What better advert could there be for the Physique division? And what better way could there be for Hot and Hard Week to end?
